Frequently Asked Questions About Solar Modules (Panels)

How do Solar modules (panels) work?

Solar panels convert sunlight into electricity using photovoltaic (PV) cells. When sunlight hits the PV cells, it generates direct current (DC) electricity. An inverter then converts the DC electricity into alternating current (AC), which powers your home or business.

The average cost to install Solar panels on a single family home in Alberta ranges from $15,000 – $30,000 before grant funding incentives. This price will depend on the amount of Solar panels required, the layout, and any electrical upgrades necessary for installation.

The Canada Greener Home Loan are financial incentive programs for Canadian home owners pursuing energy efficient home upgrades like Solar panels. The programs can offer up to $50,000 as an interest free loans per home.

UPDATE: Grant program is closed and ends Dec 31, 2025 but the Loan program is still open with a June 2025 $600M funding top-up.

Clean Energy Improvement Program “CEIP” is a program administered by Canadian municipalities to provide financing for home energy efficiency upgrades. The program can provide up to $50,000 in financing at rates of between 2-6%*

NOTE:  Canada Greener Home Grant program is closed to new participants at this time.

Applying for Solar-related grants and loans can be completed through the Greener Homes Loan portal or through your municipality’s CEIP page.

*Municipalities interest rates are subject to change for eligible homeowners.

In Alberta, homeowners are permitted to install Solar modules capable of producing up to 110% of their annual energy usage. This usage can be determined from the properties power bills, or via a third party authorization with the wire provider to assess the home interval data.

It is best to get an Energy Audit done on your home to determine how much energy your home uses.

Solar panels still produce electricity during cloudy or rainy days, but at reduced efficiency (typically 10–25% of peak output). Most systems are connected to the grid, so you still have power when Solar generation is low.

Solar modules typically last 25 to 30 years before their efficiency drops by about 20% from their original output. While performance gradually decreases over time, most panels continue to generate electricity well beyond their warranty period. In fact, many homeowners find their panels are still producing usable power for years after. When it’s time to upgrade, older panels can be relocated to a lake lot,  second property, or secondary reuse market offering continued value. And since energy needs often decrease after the children move out, many families find their original system still meets their reduced demand.

If relocation isn’t a fit, used panels can often be sold and replaced with newer models.
